(IFC). The company develops and will license technology that is used to manufacture cotton-like fibre for the textile industry from recycled fibre and cellulose. After the investment Fortum has approximately four percent ownership of the company.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of Fortum&#8217;s four strategic priorities is to build options for significant new businesses.\u00a0Bioeconomy\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0natural option due to its synergies with\u00a0the company\u2019s\u00a0current business and\u00a0the\u00a0mission to improve resource efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>The technology provided by\u00a0IFC\u00a0processes\u00a0fibre\u00a0from biomass\u00a0and recycled material\u00a0in a manner\u00a0similar to\u00a0cotton. The\u00a0resulting\u00a0fibre\u00a0is ready for use in the textile industry and can replace environmentally\u00a0harmful\u00a0virgin cotton and viscose\u00a0cost-efficiently\u00a0and using considerably less water\u00a0and chemicals\u00a0in the process.\u00a0The process can be\u00a0done repeatedly\u00a0without compromising the quality of the fibre.<\/p>\n<p>In turn, Fortum has\u00a0piloted\u00a0fractioning technologies\u00a0that\u00a0separate cellulose and other components from biomass\u00a0for further refining, resulting in\u00a0higher purity of\u00a0fractions than in the traditional pulp and biofuel\u00a0processes.\u00a0The investment in\u00a0IFC\u00a0offers Fortum natural access to\u00a0sustainable\u00a0fibre\u00a0and also\u00a0textile manufacturing\u00a0partners,\u00a0the\u00a0next steps\u00a0in the\u00a0industry\u00a0value chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaterial efficiency\u00a0offers a significant means\u00a0to curb climate change.\u00a0Fortum is studying possibilities to grow business that is based on\u00a0the\u00a0more\u00a0resource\u00a0efficient use of biomass. One option is to invest\u00a0in technology start-ups in the value chain. We believe strongly in biorefining, new technologies\u00a0and\u00a0their role in\u00a0a\u00a0more sustainably produced textile fibre.\u00a0In addition, several international brands have announced that they will increase the share of\u00a0such\u00a0fibre in their manufacturing\u00a0processes,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Heli Antila, the head of Fortum&#8217;s business focusing\u00a0on\u00a0biobased\u00a0solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Other new investors\u00a0in\u00a0IFC\u00a0include\u00a0H&amp;M Group.\u00a0In total,\u00a0IFC\u2019s investment round raised 3.7 million euros.\u00a0The company&#8217;s founders and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland remain as the main owners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fortum has complemented its biorefining value chain by investing in the Finnish start-up Infinited Fiber Company Ltd.
