{"id":61292,"date":"2019-03-11T07:20:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T06:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=61292"},"modified":"2019-03-06T12:52:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T11:52:48","slug":"nelson-fisherman-making-a-difference-with-beer-related-plastic-alternative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/nelson-fisherman-making-a-difference-with-beer-related-plastic-alternative\/","title":{"rendered":"Nelson fisherman making a difference with beer-related plastic alternative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A brewing byproduct is set to become an industry solution to beer cup wastage thanks to a fisherman who became obsessed with inventing a biodegradable plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson man Mohi Healey&#8217;s idea for a biodegradable plastic beer\u00a0cup has been given a $40,000 green light as part of a\u00a0DB Export campaign.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0deckhand on the\u00a0Sanford-owned deep sea factory trawler San Enterprise,\u00a0Healey has spent years researching\u00a0turning waste into biodegradable plastics,\u00a0prompted by his concern to reduce plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson fisherman Mohi Healey&#8217;s idea for a biodegradable plastic cup alternative has been given a $30,000 development kickstart and $10,000 cash prize as part of DB Export&#8217;s &#8216;drink beer to save the world&#8217; marketing campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s just the way I&#8217;m wired, I&#8217;m always thinking and studying the world around me wondering what the next big thing needs to be.The\u00a0crew&#8230;\u00a0often joke that all I talk about is biodegradable plastic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While working to\u00a0develop\u00a0bioplastic\u00a0films as a potential\u00a0alternative for food and beverage industry packaging,\u00a0Healey began looking into brewers&#8217; spent grains as a possible solution.<\/p>\n<p>Healey&#8217;s\u00a0aim was to use spent grains &#8211; a byproduct from the brewing process &#8211;\u00a0to develop\u00a0Polyhydroxyalkanoates\u00a0(PHA)\u00a0which is a 100 per cent\u00a0biodegradable, marine degradable and digestible polymer that can be manufactured into\u00a0bioplastic\u00a0pellets.<\/p>\n<p>The pellets can\u00a0be used in traditional manufacturing processes to produce consumer products, starting with\u00a0drinking cups.\u00a0Healey said the possibilities were potentially\u00a0&#8220;endless&#8221;, given most\u00a0plastic items\u00a0can be produced from this material.<\/p>\n<p>Healey wasted little time pitching his idea to DB Export&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/savetheentireworld.co.nz\/age\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Save the Entire World&#8217; campaign<\/a>, and he was awarded a $30,000 prototype fund, and a $10,000 prize.<\/p>\n<p>Healey is expected to be back on dry land about March, when\u00a0DB\u00a0will meet with him to work on bringing his idea to life.<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with\u00a0Gull,\u00a0DB Export has completed its second batch of\u00a0Brewtroleum,\u00a0a low-emission\u00a0biofuel\u00a0made\u00a0from turning\u00a0by-products of the brewing process into fuel-grade ethanol.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also overseen\u00a0a project to turn empty beer bottles into a sand substitute, to be\u00a0supplied to construction companies and\u00a0manufacturers,\u00a0reducing the country&#8217;s dependence on beach-derived\u00a0sand.<\/p>\n<p>DB&#8217;s campaign seeking the nation&#8217;s beer drinkers for ideas to &#8216;save the world&#8217; attracted 2700 submissions, senior beer and cider marketing manager\u00a0Tony Wheeler said.<\/p>\n<p>While many fit the bill of practical sustainability, others included glow in the dark beers, square cans for space saving and beer-powered dental nano robots that clean your teeth.<\/p>\n<p>While the company would be giving sufficient time and resources to further the first\u00a0three ideas, Wheeler said DB would\u00a0continue\u00a0to engage the recycling theme at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All we can say is watch this space.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A brewing byproduct is set to become an industry solution to beer cup wastage thanks to a fisherman who became obsessed with inventing a biodegradable plastic.
