{"id":59111,"date":"2018-12-13T07:23:28","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T06:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=59111"},"modified":"2018-12-15T14:48:54","modified_gmt":"2018-12-15T13:48:54","slug":"circa-receives-green-light-to-sell-non-toxic-bio-based-and-biodegradable-solvent-in-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/circa-receives-green-light-to-sell-non-toxic-bio-based-and-biodegradable-solvent-in-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Circa Receives Green Light to Sell Non-toxic, Bio-based and Biodegradable Solvent in EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Biotechnology company Circa Group has received authorisation from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to manufacture or import up to 100 tonnes\/year of its bio-based solvent Cyrene<sup>TM<\/sup>\u00a0in the European Union, after receiving REACH Annex VIII approval.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A chiral dipolar aprotic solvent, Cyrene<sup>TM<\/sup>\u00a0was developed in conjunction with the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE) at the University of York. Cyrene<sup>TM<\/sup>\u00a0is a two step conversion of waste biomass, produced at Circa&#8217;s large-scale prototype plant, built in partnership with pulp and paper company Norske Skog in Tasmania, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Solvent regulation is increasingly focused on restricting hazardous chemicals to manage their risk to people animals and the environment. In the EU, widely used solvents such as NMP, DMF and DMAc are on the candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) due to their reprotoxicity.
