{"id":58501,"date":"2018-11-20T06:55:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T05:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rss.nova-institut.net\/public.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cell.com%2Ftrends%2Fbiotechnology%2Ffulltext%2FS0167-7799%2818%2930304-4%3Frss%3Dyes"},"modified":"2021-09-09T21:32:38","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T19:32:38","slug":"engineering-microorganisms-for-enhanced-co2-sequestration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/engineering-microorganisms-for-enhanced-co2-sequestration\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering Microorganisms for Enhanced CO<sub>2<\/sub> Sequestration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Efforts to maximize microbial CO<sub>2<\/sub> sequestration focus on enhancing the efficiency of CO<sub>2<\/sub> fixation and reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub> emission.<br \/>\nCO<sub>2<\/sub> fixation in autotrophs can be reinforced by improving the efficiency of the CO 2-fixing pathway, developing more efficient energy-harvesting systems, and modifying the distribution of carbon flux to optimize the utilization of cell resources.<br \/>\nIn heterotrophs, CO 2 fixation may be enhanced by increasing the amount of native carboxylation during product synthesis, creation of an additional CO 2-fixing bypass, and engineering heterotrophs capable of growing with CO 2 as sole carbon resource.<br \/>\nMicrobial CO 2 release may be reduced by rewiring metabolic pathways, improving redox balance, and decreasing respiratory ATP production.<br \/>\nMicrobial CO 2 sequestration not only provides a green and sustainable approach for ameliorating global warming but also simultaneously produces biofuels and chemicals. However, the efficiency of microbial CO 2 fixation is still very low. In addition, concomitant microbial CO 2 emission decreases the carbon yield of desired chemicals. To address these issues, strategies including engineering CO 2-fixing pathways and energy-harvesting systems have been developed to improve the efficiency of CO 2 fixation in autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms. Furthermore, metabolic pathways and energy metabolism can be rewired to reduce microbial CO 2 emissions and increase the carbon yield of value-added products.
