The 2013 Common Agricultural Policy reform addressed these problems with \u201cgreening\u201d measures, in an attempt to make the direct payments system more environment-friendly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Farmers receiving an area-based payment need to make use of several practices to benefit the environment, including \u201cEcological focus areas\u201d (EFAs), first implemented in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission came under fire about its proposals for the post-2020 CAP when it comes to the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly, environmental NGOs strongly criticised the executive\u2019s proposals on tackling climate change, stating that increasing member states\u2019 decision-making powers would kill environmental goals.<\/p>\n<p>EURACTIV organised this workshop to discuss how the new CAP could help tackle climate change and the way forward for a more environment-friendly agriculture. Questions included:<\/p>\n<p>Can the new CAP proposals have tangible results in the fight against climate change?<br \/>\nCan the new delivery model respond to the rising environmental needs?<br \/>\nWhat lessons can be learnt from the previous CAP?<br \/>\nWhat is the role of new technologies in the new CAP and how they can contributing to the greening of the sector?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental pressure and climate change are some of the main challenges facing agriculture today.
