{"id":53936,"date":"2018-06-22T07:29:49","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T05:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=53936"},"modified":"2018-06-20T15:16:58","modified_gmt":"2018-06-20T13:16:58","slug":"cosmetic-makers-find-plenty-of-alternatives-to-microbeads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/cosmetic-makers-find-plenty-of-alternatives-to-microbeads\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosmetic makers find plenty of alternatives to microbeads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following calls for a ban on the tiny plastic beads in January last year,\u00a0many skincare companies began working to find alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0the ban just came into force on June 7, numerous companies had already started using\u00a0natural alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;Oreal\u00a0New Zealand group corporate communications manager\u00a0Tanya Abbott\u00a0said the company had swapped out plastic microbeads for\u00a0mineral-based ingredients, such as\u00a0clays and the powder of fruit\u00a0kernels, in its\u00a0wash-off\u00a0cleansing\u00a0and\u00a0exfoliating\u00a0products.<\/p>\n<p>However, while the ingredients had been changed, there could still be &#8220;a few products&#8221;\u00a0containing\u00a0microbeads\u00a0on the shelves in some markets, Abbott said.<\/p>\n<p>Antipodes beauty expert\u00a0Deborah Sampson\u00a0said there were a lot of environmentally-friendly alternatives to plastic\u00a0microbeads\u00a0for exfoliation.<\/p>\n<p>Their products contain\u00a0jojoba beads, derived from a\u00a0jojoba shrub. Jojoba beads were\u00a0biodegradable, and would\u00a0not irritate or scratch skin, Sampson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What makes jojoba so unique compared to other seed oils is that jojoba oil is structurally and chemically very similar to the human sebum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Antipodes had never used\u00a0microbeads, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Trilogy global in-house beauty expert\u00a0Corinne\u00a0Morley\u00a0said\u00a0microbeads\u00a0had never been used\u00a0in their products either.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the company used\u00a0jojoba wax\u00a0microspheres\u00a0and\u00a0ground\u00a0rosehip seed powder.<\/p>\n<p>The powder was\u00a0ground from the solids which remained\u00a0after the seed oil extraction process, making good use of a by-product and reducing waste, Morley said.<\/p>\n<p>The Warehouse stocked a number of\u00a0products containing crushed almond shell, oats, crushed walnut shell, kiwifruit seeds, jojoba seeds, rice and sugar.<\/p>\n<p>It is illegal in New Zealand to manufacture or sell some products,\u00a0including\u00a0toothpastes, face washes, glitter bubble baths,\u00a0containing the minute plastic particles.<\/p>\n<p>Retailers caught ignoring the ban face\u00a0a\u00a0fine of\u00a0up to $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>During the submissions process,\u00a0the\u00a0New Zealand Product Stewardship Council said\u00a0alternatives to microbead products were readily available in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>The council added the alternatives were\u00a0&#8220;not necessarily&#8221; more expensive than microbead-containing products.<\/p>\n<p>Individual submitters believed\u00a0alternative products would be slightly more expensive, but said\u00a0they would buy them regardless of this.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following calls for a ban on the tiny plastic beads in January last year,\u00a0many skincare companies began working to find alternatives.
