Ginkgo BioWorks took the #1 spot in the 2017-18 \u201c40 Hottest Emerging Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy\u201d rankings, published today in The Digest and Nuu, the world\u2019s most widely-read advanced bioeconomy dailies. It is the first time for Ginkgo at the top of the list, and the first time each of the others reached the top five.<\/p>\n
Ginkgo BioWorks (#1), Impossible Foods (#2), Calysta (#3), Bolt Threads (#4), Zymergen (#5), Arzeda (#6),Oberon Fuels (#7), POET-DSM (#8), Leaf Resources (#9), and NexSteppe (#10), composed the top 10.<\/p>\n
Ranked #11 through #20 are Caribou Biosciences, Mango Materials, Beyond Meat, Comet Biorefining, Twist Bioscience, Altair Fuels, Perfect Day, Vertimass, Clara Foods and Celtic Renewables.<\/p>\n
A record number of new companies
\nWith a new generation of companies based in advanced nutrition and synthetic bilogy, a shift in global commodity prices, mergers and significant progress towards commercial-scale by many companies, 13 companies reached the Hot 40 for the first time in 2016. They are:<\/p>\n

Silicon Valley dominates
\nOverall, 20 companies founded in the technology hotbed of Silicon Valley \u2014 and overwhelmingly, US-founded companies dominated this early-stage company rankings. 37 of the 40 were US companies.<\/p>\n
The rankings recognize biotechnology innovation and achievement in fuels, biobased chemicals, nutrition, health, syntheric biology, and materials, and the Hot 40 specifically recognizes emerging companies founded in the past 10 years. Rankings are based on votes from an invited panel of distinguished international selectors.<\/p>\n
The Miami, FL-based Digest\u00a0 and Nuu serves more than 2.8 million unique readers and followers via the web, newsletters, social media and broadcast in every UN-recognized country. The rankings have been conducted annually since 2008.<\/p>\n
