The European Commission has introduced new hazardous chemical limits in its revision of the EU Ecolabel criteria for wood floorings.<\/p>\n
This follows calls from the European Consumer Organisation (Beuc) and the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) for tougher rules on chemicals to be included in proposed criteria for wood, cork and bamboo-based floor coverings.<\/p>\n
The new criteria:<\/p>\n
limit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) content;
\nban uses of flame retardants and halogenated compounds, including PVC; and
\nrestrict the use of formaldehyde.<\/p>\n
“As of now, manufacturers who produce EU Ecolabel floor coverings will have to drastically restrict the use of hazardous substances such as formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical,” a Beuc spokesperson told Chemical Watch.<\/p>\n
Italian company Lignum Venetia is the only company holding a EU Ecolabel for wood flooring. To date, Beuc said, only one or two floor producers in Europe have applied for the Ecolabel. “But we are confident that more will follow suit. The expanded criteria now include laminate coverings, which means more products can display the label.”<\/p>\n
The European Commission updated the Ecolabel criteria on 25 January and it will be valid for six years.<\/p>\n
The Ecolabel is currently undergoing a fitness check evaluation under the Commission’s REFIT programme. This aims to make EU law ‘fit for purpose’ by simplifying and reducing regulation. The results are expected in the first quarter of this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
