{"id":40475,"date":"2017-02-09T07:41:17","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T06:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rss.nova-institut.net\/public.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.plasticsnews.com%2Farticle%2F20170206%2FNEWS%2F170209941%2Fyanfeng-rings-up-its-first-production-for-chym-lightweight-interior"},"modified":"2018-02-15T13:43:47","modified_gmt":"2018-02-15T12:43:47","slug":"yanfeng-rings-up-its-first-production-for-chym-lightweight-interior-parts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/yanfeng-rings-up-its-first-production-for-chym-lightweight-interior-parts\/","title":{"rendered":"Yanfeng rings up its first production for CHyM lightweight interior parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yanfeng Automotive Interiors has launched production of its Compression Hybrid Molding (CHyM) process for a door panel in South Korea, and it is due to go onto a European vehicle this year.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 Johnson Controls Inc. first showed its proprietary Compression Hybrid Molding (CHyM) process for lighter weight auto interior parts using biocomposites in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, what had been the auto interiors unit at JCI is now part of Yanfeng Automotive Interiors, and as Yanfeng, the company now has its CHyM \u2014 which it pronounces as \u201cchime\u201d \u2014 process in production, making door panels on the Cadenza, made in South Korea by Kia Motor Corp. A second production line, with an undisclosed European carmaker, will launch soon.<\/p>\n<p>With the process gaining traction, Yanfeng is further refining the potential for lighter weight interiors, now by marrying the biocomposite with a lighter weight decorative cover made from film, rather than a standard leather or molded skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re continuing to develop more and more lightweight and cost affordable solutions,\u201d said Craig Theisen, vice president of product management \u2014 door panels, during an interview at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Jan. 10.<\/p>\n<p>CHyM uses a natural fiber mat, put into a tool and back injected with polypropylene with a honeycomb structure to provide needed performance. It also is available as a glass fiber mat. On its own, CHyM parts offer up to 40 percent weight savings, depending on the part and the customers\u2019 demands.<br \/>\nRhoda Miel A lightweight decorative film offers automakers a variety of patterns for CHyM parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you compare an injection molded substrate with this natural fiber material, it takes kilos out,\u201d said Han Hendricks, vice president of technology for Yanfeng, which has global offices in Shanghai and U.S. offices in Plymouth, Mich.<\/p>\n<p>The CHyM panels can be used without any skin, but few automakers have shown an interest in showing the natural material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a consumer point of view, you can still have the leather or PVC slush molded skin if that\u2019s what you want, but the substrate is the natural, lightweight structure,\u201d Hendricks said.<\/p>\n<p>But now as an option, Yanfeng is showing a new decorative cover with a thermoplastic polyolefin film.<\/p>\n<p>Examples shown by Yanfeng at its NAIAS booth used a patterned film which still allowed the natural fiber to be seen beneath the surface in a tight mesh, producing a three-dimensional effect.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Zimmer, senior process engineer for Yanfeng, pointed to examples that produced panels that resembled waves, ripples or herringbone patterns.
