But, says Perstorp, “No-one can do everything but everyone can do something!” So, why not make taking The Challenge to join the initiative a New Year’s resolution for 2017?

“It’s time to act!” says Perstorp, a specialty chemicals company based in Sweden. And suiting the action to the word, the company launched its Time to Act campaign at the recent European Bioplastics conference in Berlin, where it was a Silver sponsor.

As part of the campaign, Perstorp has devised “The Challenge”, a quiz developed to inform and educate participants about plastics waste issues. For each person joining, Perstorp will make a donation to preserve the planet. The initiative is in line with Perstorp’s focus on sustainability and its aim to offer sustainable solutions.

Perstorp’s Time to act campaign aims to encourage a more responsible use and disposal of plastics. As the authors of The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics, a report compiled by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation which appeared in January of this year:

“Priority one is to ensure that waste is being taken care of properly. As a society we need to take full responsibility for our plastic. More than 40 years after the launch of the famous recycling symbol, still only 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling.”

Around the globe, one million plastic bags are used every minute throughout the year. Unfortunately, many of these are single-use bags, with an average “working life” of just 15 short minutes. And, when waste management fails, these bags, along with other types of plastic packaging, end up in the environment.

For this reason, there is an increasing trend towards the use of sustainable, biodegradable and renewable materials across the world, says Perstorp.

“The challenge for the bioplastics market is to combine performance with biodegradability of the end application material”, says Linda Zellner, Project Manager Bioplastics at Perstorp. “With our Capa for Bioplastics , you can create fully biodegradable products with high performance properties without compromising sustainability. Not only does Capa improve properties during processing and in use, but it can also substantially increase the rate of biodegradation once the products enter the organic waste stream. When disposed of, it biodegrades, and in the right conditions, as fast as in 40 days.”

“We want to see a dynamic bioplastics market,” says Jesper Fahlén, Global Product Manager Capa. “It is still young and fast-growing, but it is in need of high performing and sustainable innovations to fulfil its potential. Perstorp believes that Capa for Bioplastics can boost growth in the bioplastic packaging sector. Our resources are ideally suited to support producers of bags and films, rigid packaging, and paper coatings.”

For more information on the Time to Act campaign and Capa for Bioplastics, visit:
https://www.perstorp.com/en/timetoact/time_to_act

Plastic waste is a modern-day scourge.
