Last week, Neste announced<\/a> a partnership with IKEA to develop bio-based plastics for use in IKEA\u2019s home furnishing products. According to Neste\u2019s press release, the partners openly \u201cinvite other companies to join the initiative\u201d to reduce dependence on petroleum-based materials and \u201caddress the growing market for bio-based products.\u201d IKEA and Neste aim to produce the first proof-of-concept product during 2017.<\/p>\n

In 2014, IKEA released its Sustainability Strategy Report<\/a> highlighting commitments to source all plastic for its home furnishing product line from 100% renewable and\/or recycled material by August 2020. Since then, the company has formed a series of partnerships in the bio-based space, including a supply, collaboration, and technology license agreement with Newlight Technologies in March 2016 (client registration required for both). The most recent partnership with Neste further emphasizes IKEA\u2019s leadership in commercializing bio-based products, especially against the tide of low crude oil prices and nascent regulatory drivers.<\/p>\n

However, underneath the public announcement, sparse details of the partnership leave some major unanswered questions about the respective roles in Neste\u2019s and IKEA\u2019s arrangement. Neste is perhaps best known as a leading producer of renewable diesel (client registration required) and a closer look at Neste\u2019s product and safety data sheets shows the company\u2019s focus on bio-oil products such as lubricants, base oils, and solvents. Although Neste cites plastics in its 2015 Sustainability Report<\/a> as a subset under \u201cRenewable Products\u201d for key business areas, bio-based polymers is not currently one of the company\u2019s core domains of expertise:<\/p>\n

Neste claims<\/a> it can produce bio-based polymers through \u201csteam cracking of renewable hydrocarbons\u201d via its NEXBTL platform, but what the company really brings to the partnership is its vast network of waste oil feedstock suppliers<\/a> (client registration required). IKEA is the final link in the supply chain for developing products and applications for bio-plastics, but neither IKEA nor Neste have experience commercially producing bio-based polymers. The partners\u2019 call for other companies to join their initiative means there\u2019s likely a need for help mostly from those with expertise in bio-based plastic production technologies for collaboration and possible integration into Neste\u2019s existing facilities.
