Analysis and estimation of energy input and production rates show that BEP2G may become an attractive alternative for thermochemical methanation, and biochemical methanogenesis. To determine if BEP2G can become a future power-to-gas technology, challenges relating to cathodic energy losses, choice of a suitable electron donor, efficient reactor design/operation, and experience with large reactors need to be overcome.

Trends

Bioelectrochemical methane production has been studied under many different experimental conditions and using many different inoculum sources. There has been no clear trend in methane production rates or current-to-methane efficiencies over time.

Methane generation in BESs can occur via different biotic or abiotic mechanisms: direct electron transfer, or mediated electron transfer. Hydrogen is the most common intermediate, but formate or acetate may also play a role.

Selecting for hydrogenotrophic methanogens might be a strategy for improving the performance of methane-producing BESs.

Anaerobic digestion and BEP2G could be combined in situ, placing the electrodes inside the digester, or ex situ, upgrading the biogas outside the digester via bioelectrochemical systems.

Bioelectrochemical power-to-gas (BEP2G) is considered a potentially convenient way of storing renewable surplus electricity in the form of methane.
