The shortlist is representative of our industry being a mix of large and small companies, but all with innovation at their heart.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will be announced at Bio-Based Live in San Francisco on 27th September. So who has made it onto our shortlists?<\/p>\n<p>Bio-Based Product of the Year<\/p>\n<p>A product currently available to purchase in North, Central or South America and that is derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials and provides an alternative to conventional petroleum derived products. For the purpose of the awards, bio-based products do not include food, animal feed or fuel. The key is how the product improves on one derived from petroleum, sustainability is not enough, our judges will be looking for developments in price and quality.<\/p>\n<p>Bio-Based Product of the Year Shortlist (in alphabetical order):<\/p>\n<p>Bioserie \u2013 Bio-plastic baby toys made from plants.<br \/>\nClub Coffee LP &#8211; 100% compostable pods for single serve coffee<br \/>\nRivertop Renewables &#8211; Waterline a versatile and sustainable option for cooling water treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Bio-Based Chemical Innovation of the Year<\/p>\n<p>An innovation involving a platform or intermediate chemicals derived from biomass feedstocks, used to produce other chemicals. It can be a breakthrough development, a new method of production, a smarter development or a new technique. The key is the innovation and the ability to display a benefit and progress for the industry long-term.<\/p>\n<p>Bio-Based Chemical Innovation of the Year Shortlist\u00a0(in alphabetical order)<\/p>\n<p>Lygos &#8211; Bio-Malonic Acid drop-in specialty chemical, at lower cost, higher purity, and without the use of cyanide<br \/>\nOhio Soybean Farmers and their Checkoff, in partnership with Redwood Innovations, LLC &amp; Battelle Memorial Institute \u2013 a cost-effective, safe, and practical solution to replace BPA-based epoxy coatings<br \/>\nSylvatex \u2013 A renewable, bio-based reaction media allowing for nanoscale cathode material production.<br \/>\nSpeaking about the shortlist announcement, one of the judging panel, Michele Jalbert (Chief\u00a0Operating Officer,\u00a0Renewable Chemical and Materials Alliance\u00a0(re:chem); \u201cThis year\u2019s Innovation Award nominees truly spanned the industrial and consumer goods sectors, showcasing progress across the board in developing innovative bio-based alternatives to meet immediate market demand \u2013 and promising to deliver systemic change in the shift away from non-renewable incumbent products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chair of the judges, Luke Upton, Editor of Bio-Based World News added; \u201cIt\u2019s been a pleasure to see the variety, energy and innovation displayed in our entries. We make a point of encouraging companies of all sizes to submit their products and chemicals, and we\u2019ve certainly see that this year. The voting was very close, with only a few points separating each entry.
