{"id":36654,"date":"2016-08-15T07:20:05","date_gmt":"2016-08-15T05:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=36654"},"modified":"2016-08-11T11:47:32","modified_gmt":"2016-08-11T09:47:32","slug":"food-based-textiles-a-peel-as-alternative-to-leather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/food-based-textiles-a-peel-as-alternative-to-leather\/","title":{"rendered":"Food-Based Textiles: \u201cA-Peel\u201d as Alternative to Leather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pineapple purses, funghi footwear, and other real, food-based products are showing potential in transforming the textile industry.<\/p>\n<p>The ever-growing movement to eliminate leather, fur, and other animal products from the wardrobes of the world are gaining popularity for a number of reasons, not the least of which is sparing animals of their hides and repurposing\u00a0materials that would have ended up as waste.<\/p>\n<p>On the peels\u2014er, heels\u2014of this movement is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ananas-anam.com\/pinatex\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pi\u00f1atex<\/a>, a material made from the fibers of pineapple leaves that are a byproduct of the fruit harvest.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, its producers say, no additional land, water, or fertilizer is needed to produce the leather alternative, which is being used in the manufacturing of shoes, bags, and furnishings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about a product, it\u2019s about the responsibility,\u201d said Carmen Hijosa, founder and CEO of Ananas Anam, parent company of Pi\u00f1atex. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to think about the consequences of our thinking and our doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started developing the material while working with the Design Centre Philippines, which became the basis for her PhD at London\u2019s Royal College of Art.<\/p>\n<p>The sustainable production of the leaf-based textile, she said, can help developing economies \u2014 without the environmental or ethical implications of leather.<\/p>\n<p>Another food-based leather alternative is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gradozero.eu\/gzenew\/index.php?pg=muskin&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">MuSkin<\/a>, a suede-like material extracted from the cap of the Phellinus ellipsoideus species of mushroom.<\/p>\n<p>According to Marco Gozzani, a representative for\u00a0raw material supplier Life Materials, there is strong market demand for animal leather alternatives\u2014and not the synthetic ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want, we can find sustainable alternatives to common behaviors,\u201d said Gozzani. \u201cAnd we can point out the excessive use of animal-derived products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Life Materials is a commercial brand of Italian company Grado Zero Innovation, the supplier of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gradozero.eu\/gzenew\/index.php?pg=muskin&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">MuSkin<\/a>, a raw material used in bags, hats, shoe insoles, belts, and other products.<\/p>\n<p>In MuSkin, for example, there are no chemicals used, making it non-toxic and a good source alternative to items that come in direct contact with the skin.<\/p>\n<p>The mushroom-based material is also naturally water-repellent\u2014kind of like having a built in umbrella for your accessories.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds pretty sustainable to us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pineapple purses, funghi footwear, and other real, food-based products are showing potential in transforming the textile industry.
