{"id":36132,"date":"2016-07-19T07:20:32","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T05:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=36132"},"modified":"2016-07-18T12:23:14","modified_gmt":"2016-07-18T10:23:14","slug":"nanostructures-extracted-from-algae-woman-with-70-percent-burns-to-body-receives-pioneering-skin-transplant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/nanostructures-extracted-from-algae-woman-with-70-percent-burns-to-body-receives-pioneering-skin-transplant\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanostructures extracted from algae: Woman with 70 percent burns to body receives pioneering skin transplant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A woman in Andalusia, southern Spain, successfully received a pioneering skin transplant process that combines tissue engineering and the use of nanostructures extracted from algae.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, 29, who suffered burns to 70 percent of her body last April, was the first person to receive a transplant of this type.<\/p>\n<p>The use of skin made from a patient&#8217;s own cells avoids the risk of transplant rejection, reduces the risk of infection and improves recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Further, this transplant technique was the first to use a chemical substance harvested from a marine algae, improving the elasticity and thickness of the skin.<\/p>\n<p>The new patent was registered by the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) and the University of Granada who have since requested that the procedure be rolled out nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Medical professionals from hospitals in Granada and Seville, as well as the University of Granada, said that this new technique could improve the prognosis of many other patients.<\/p>\n<p>The process developed 5,900 cm sheets of skin that were transplanted onto the patient in two procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Miguel Alaminos said the creation of the biomaterial represented a milestone after a decade of research in tissue engineering and should allow the patient to be discharged from the hospital in a month.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Purificacion Gacto, from the Plastic Surgery unit in the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville, said that before the operation the patient did not have a good prognosis.<\/p>\n<p>Historically skin grafts on such a scale have required deceased donations, and are temporary transplants with increased risks of both rejection and infection.<\/p>\n<p>This new technique should reduce mortality rates.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, doctors are creating a second skin graft for a patient with burns to more than 70 percent of their body who is due to be operated on in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A woman in Andalusia, southern Spain, successfully received a pioneering skin transplant process that combines tissue engineering and the use of nanostructures extracted from algae.
