This project is expected to be commissioned in 2018 in Fos-sur-Mer and will use 1 MW of electrolysers to produce hydrogen from water.

As part of the Jupiter 1000 project, McPhy Energy, a developer of hydrogen-based solutions, will supply GRTgaz, a natural gas transmission system operator, with hydrogen production equipment. The hydrogen will be injected into the natural gas network, either directly or after transformation into methane, the principal constituent of natural gas.

The Jupiter 1000 project: hydrogen will be injected into the gas supply network
“This project marks the first step in launching power-to-gas in France. This sector has already demonstrated its efficacy in other countries in contributing to building essential new models for energy transition,” said McPhy Energy’s CEO, Pascal Mauberger.

In a separate development, fuel cell company PowerCell Sweden has launched a pilot study into how storing renewable energy as hydrogen can provide electricity on cloudy and windless days.

The study is expected to lead to a demonstration project in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2016.

Per Wassén, CEO of PowerCell Sweden, said: “This [could] lead to a completely new, large-scale industry created around this area, i.e., hydrogen storage of surplus energy from wind and solar energy.”

Editor’s comment: By transforming surplus electricity originating from wind and solar energy into hydrogen or methane, power-to-gas offers a solution to the challenges associated with variable output renewables.
