BioInnovation, the strategic R&D initiative between the Chemical, Textile and Forest industries, has announced the granting of its first innovation project “Establishing locally produced textiles in Sweden”. The project will be led by Pernilla Walkenstr\u00f6m from Swerea IVF and has a budget of 45.4 million SEK over three years. Behind the project are companies, research institutes and academia that during three years will work together to create sustainable production of new textile fiber from wood based raw materials or recycled bio-based textiles.<\/p>\n
The global demand for textile fibers is growing as a result of a growing middle class and urbanization – the demand is expected \u00a0to triple by year 2050. Production of oil-based textile fiber and cotton fiber has peaked partly due to adverse effects on the environment. The purpose of this project is to investigate whether, and how, sustainable bio-based textile production can be achieved through the production of textile fibers from wood based raw materials or recycled bio-based textiles.<\/p>\n
The project is a strategic initiative to develop the area around the non-woven and textile materials in Sweden. It will be done by creating an overall knowledge platform for the new cross-industry collaboration and new business models, and by taking out individual examples as proof-of-concept.<\/p>\n
