Manufacturing of cement and use of concrete is very harmful to the climate on a global level. Cement production and the use of concrete are currently responsible for one tenth of all global CO2 emissions, which is why the greater use of wood in high-rise apartment buildings and in large constructions needs to be accelerated.

If European house construction, currently based on concrete, was based on wood, the consumption of non-renewable natural resources in construction would be reduced by two-thirds; energy consumption from the manufacturing of building materials and construction halved and CO2 emissions cut more than by one half.

Use of cement worldwide has grown steadily over the past 20 years and is now 4.200 million tons per annum. Cement manufacturing requires a great deal of energy and the production process also emits carbon dioxide as a result of a chemical reaction. Hence, the overall climate impact is substantial.

Read more: Newsletter in pdf

As a consequence the construction sector needs to move towards using renewable raw materials as swiftly as possible.
