Sinar Mas Group, a diversified business conglomerate, is currently assessing business opportunities for palm oil-based bioplastic goods, to take advantage of the government&#8217;s recent tax cuts for so-called pioneering industries.<\/p>\n<p>Franky Widjdja, the chairman of publicly listed Sinar Mas Agribusiness &amp; Foods (SMART), said the company was currently researching the feasibility of bioplastics, which are derived from vegetable-based oils such palm oil, rather than from crude oil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re learning about the commercial possibilities of the business. Right now, the government is offering a really attractive incentive,&#8221; Franky told reporters in Jakarta over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re currently researching about bioplastic and a feasibility study of the business. With products like bioplastic and biofuel, we have to see how it will do commercially first,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to spur investment and revive the nation&#8217;s sluggish economy, the government had said it would exempt taxes for pioneer industries, including manufacturing industries that are based on agriculture, forestry and fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>Sinar Mas Group is currently constructing two biodiesel fuel factories located in Jakarta and Kalimantan with total capacity to process up to 800,000 metric tons of crude palm oil, Franky said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The investment wasn&#8217;t really that costly.
