These products are typically produced from oil-based raw materials and have numerous applications in the medical, construction, personal care and filtration industries. Nonwoven materials are typically created mechanically, thermally or chemically and can be made into a broad range of products such as agricultural coverings, fabrics, apparel linings, carpeting, diapers, wipes, filtration media, insulation, roofing and medical products.

With the advent of biopolymer alternatives to oil-based materials, innovative companies such as Metabolix customer Biovation located in Boothbay, Maine, are creating new categories of nonwoven products that utilize biobased and biodegradable materials. Biovation is using meltblown Ingeo™ polylactic acid (PLA) which is made from renewable sources in combination with Metabolix’s Mirel® polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) to create a new nonwoven material used for a blood pressure cuff shield and a tactical footwear dryer sheet. In these applications, Mirel serves as a performance additive for Ingeo PLA to impart specific properties to the nonwoven material. When added to PLA, PHA can help create a smoother surface texture, softer hand and increased tensile strength of nonwoven products.

“Using sustainable biopolymers to create new products is really an exciting business to be in today,” said Kerem Durdag, CEO of Biovation. “By improving the performance of PLA with PHA and increasing biocontent and sustainability we are on the cutting edge of product development in a number of industries.”

Biovation’s BioArmour™ Blood Pressure Cuff Shield, which was launched in Canada, EU and other countries earlier this year, is a disposable, non-sterile protective liner designed to last through a 24-hour period of multi-patient use. The liner has skin-soft dynamics aimed at the comfort of patients while still maintaining the antimicrobial and antifungal protective properties of the shield.

The BioArmour™ Blood Pressure Cuff Shield, a multi-patient use, hygienic barrier

In addition to the cuff liner, Biovation is also using Mirel PHA in combination with PLA to make the DryRight™ Tactical Boot Drying Sheet which the company is developing in collaboration with the U.S. Marine Corp. The Dry Right sheet is designed to sustain an optimum microenvironment around the foot to ensure comfort for those spending significant time in the field such as soldiers and outdoorsmen. The sheet helps to promote maximum boot dryness independent of climate and weather conditions.

The DryRight™ Tactical Boot Drying Sheet, used for drying footwear

As the demand for renewable sources rises and technologies evolve, Mirel PHA resins in combination with PLA, can continue to move innovation forward in nonwoven applications by enabling formulations that meet customer needs, enhance system performance and/or reduce system cost. Metabolix looks forward to working closely with customers to develop and commercialize opportunities where we improve performance of PLA with PHA while delivering performance, bio-content and sustainability.

BioArmour™ and DryRIght™ are trademarks of Biovation. Ingeo™ is a trademark of NatureWorks.

Nonwovens are used in numerous industries and is an area where sustainable biopolymers can be used to create materials with new functionality. “Nonwovens” are typically fabrics and sheets created by bonding together entangled fiber or filaments.
