But what is a bio-based coffee cup, and above all, how to buy it? There appeared to explore a world of coffee cups but eventually it worked. Rob Heijink, category manager, Henk Jaap Buikema, vendor manager, and Michel Goossen from Douwe Egberts went together in conversation. With a cup of coffee there.

To begin with, what is purchasing biobased?

Rob Heijink category catering manager of the Empire, explains: “Our economy depends largely on fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases and eventually run out. Therefore, we need to switch to renewable raw materials, such as wood, sugar beets, potatoes and seaweed. Biobased products already exist, but the market share is still small. Stimulating bio-based purchasing is therefore policy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Cabinet and in Europe. With the purchasing power of the Empire, you can stimulate development in bio-based. ”

Why a pilot project for bio-based coffee cups?

“The coffee cup is very visible in the workplace and one finds a plastic cup not an option anymore. And rightly so, ‘you Heijink, “thinking of the plastic soup. Moreover, there are stories circulating on the Internet that hot drinks from plastic cups would be bad for the health. Even though this is not proven, the need for biobased there anyway. But biobased mug shopping was not as simple as it sounds. There was a whole world to explore, because there are a lot of research done on what is and is not bio-based but the findings differ and divided opinions. ”

How have you dealt with the tender?

“We have our demand for bio-based trophies included as a pilot in the tender for hot drinks machines for the Ministries of Social Affairs and Health. The biobased cup was a requirement, its effect was an award criterion. Because of the different opportunities offered by the market but also because we wanted to provide space for creativity and innovation. We have a plan and this uitgevraagd judged on material recycling, waste disposal and the ability to switch during the contract to more innovative solutions. The offers of the bidders met the expectations I had from before, so I would have hoped for some more innovation. ”

Why the results were disappointing?

‘Douwe Egberts has won a cup FSC paper, with inside a coating based on corn instead of petroleum. This is pretty standard, market research we knew that more was possible. The raw materials are well biobased, only unnecessarily high quality. This is unfortunate, because most coffee cups end up despite special bins still with the regular trash, and they are not recycled but incinerated. Better is to use low-grade raw materials. But I suspect that the cup price ranging from 1.5 to 7 cents, on the whole a coffee 14 cents is too little to stimulate suppliers to innovate. ”

So it is the standard FSC-cup?

“Yes, but only for part of the term. After the award had shown that there is now indeed a cup is going a step further, “says Henk Jaap Buikema, vendor manager at FM Haaglanden, the facility service in eight ministries. ‘Douwe Egberts told that there is a bio-based cup of low-value commodity on the market, made of bagasse, a waste product of the sugar cane industry. The cup is qualitatively similar only you do not need paper FSE wood use more. This is actually too valuable raw material for disposable cups. ”

Why Douwe Egberts did not immediately presented this cane cup?

Michel Goossen, bidmanager at Douwe Egberts “We are cautious in offering innovations. And because this cup in the Registration has not yet proven to be available in the correct size, we have waited offering. You have to take into account at registration. That is why we agreed with FM Haaglanden that we as quickly as possible, perhaps already this year and cost neutral, yet transfer to the cane cup. ” Buikema: “I can imagine that many things need to be tested, such as dimensions, undisturbed cup issue, or the taste of the coffee is affected, or the raw material is continuously available, and so on. The large-scale application of something new is sometimes more challenging than invent something new. With the switch from DE to the other cup is put at least a step in the right direction. ”

How was it for Douwe Egberts, a pilot for biobased coffee cups?

Goossen: “It challenged us to think about solutions, even though we were there, to be honest, but in limited. The waste treatment methods have not so far that they can recycle coffee cups on a large scale. They are converted into or very low quality paper or processed subcoal but usually still burned. The wait continues for higher quality – so-called end-of-life scenarios – for recycling these cups. What we do do is send coffee drinkers in their behavior with specially colored treetjes for the cups. Allows everyone’s cup is recognizable, which makes it easier to use it several times. ”

How do you drive innovation in the market?

“Through our interrogation to send more, ‘says Buikema. “And I like to go with the market talking about new financial structures. The idea of biobased is also clear that the government saves money somewhere in the chain, such as the disposal costs of the procurement volume will be lower. It provides the buyer therefore money while the supplier must invest to innovate. That pinches somewhere and there are solid solutions. ” According Heijink is mainly working with the waste industry is important. “We have to make some arrangements with our waste treatment plant, but the more we recycle instead of burn, the better.”

More info

This article is part of the new web file Socially Responsible Procurement (SRI).
