{"id":25500,"date":"2015-04-15T03:18:11","date_gmt":"2015-04-15T01:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=25500"},"modified":"2015-04-14T11:36:29","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T09:36:29","slug":"eu-rapeseed-stocks-to-near-halve-as-output-falters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/eu-rapeseed-stocks-to-near-halve-as-output-falters\/","title":{"rendered":"EU rapeseed stocks to near-halve, as output falters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European Union rapeseed stocks will fall next season at their fastest in more than a decade, hit by the prospect of lower production \u2013 both in the bloc and in country&#8217;s which export to it.<\/p>\n<p>EU rapeseed stocks will near-halve in 2015-16 to 1.30m tonnes, the lowest in eight years, US Department of Agriculture foreign staff said in a report.<\/p>\n<p>The decline reflected in part a forecast of an 11.6% fall to 21.3m tonnes in production as farmers cut sowings of the oilseed, for reasons largely related to European Commission policy.<\/p>\n<h3>Red tape<\/h3>\n<p>These included a watering down by the EU of biofuel targets, a change which farmers have interpreted meaning &#8220;weaker demand with lower prices for the upcoming crop, which will lead to poorer margins compared to other crops&#8221;, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Rapeseed oil is, like other vegetable oils, used largely in making biodiesel.<\/p>\n<p>EU subsidy reforms, encouraging farmers to plant a range of crops, &#8220;also shifted farmers away from seeding rapeseed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And yield prospects of what has been seeded have been undercut by a ban on controversial neonicitinoid insecticides, leaving rapeseed crops vulnerable to insect pests such as the cabbage stem flea beatle.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the ban may mean further losses, with the mild winter, which has reduced winterkill losses, also potentially a setback to rapeseed crops in that it &#8220;might increase insect infestation and disease pressure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Supplies projected low&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Nor will the EU will be able to rely on imports to make up for the shortfall in domestic production, with crops in some other producing countries seen depressed too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Supplies on the world market are also projected low,&#8221; the USDA staff said, foreseeing imports at 2.6m tonnes in 2015-16, in line with those this season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The export potential of the Ukraine remains below average.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The USDA official&#8217;s forecast for EU rapeseed is above the 21.1m tonnes expected by the European Commission, but below the 21.6m tonnes forecast by industry group Coceral, and the 21.9m tonnes expected by analysis group Strategie Grains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>European Union rapeseed stocks will fall next season at their fastest in more than a decade, hit by the prospect of lower production \u2013 both in the bloc and in country&#8217;s which export to it.
