That concludes the CDB (Corbey Commission) in a publication where its main insights on biomass use are bundled. Prerequisite is that all biomass is produced sustainably, whatever the application. The Committee calls for national, European and international policy that biomass sustainability as a precondition, increased availability and efficient use of land and encourages biomass.

Of fuel to feedstock

The use of biomass will gradually shift more and more of a source of fuel and energy for a clean bio-based raw materials and chemical products. Then energy (electricity or heat) are largely generated from waste streams that are not useful elsewhere. Preliminary bioenergy however indispensable addition to solar and wind energy, to meet targets for greenhouse gas reduction and renewable energy

Utilizing sustainable biomass efficiently

The published Corbey Commission discusses the advantages and disadvantages of biomass, the risks and solutions to avoid the negative consequences. Environmental and social risks such as deforestation and land expropriation are largely manageable by using broad sustainability requirements in the production of biomass. And exploit these renewable biomass then efficiently using bio-refining and cascading. This means that biomass must be where the added value and greenhouse gas reduction are highest deployed. The Corbey Commission advocated priority for food, medicine and bio-chemicals over biofuels and bioenergy.

Investing in biomass realize potential

The potential is there enough sustainable biomass available. But that biomass is not up for grabs: large (policy) necessary efforts and investments to make available sustainable biomass. Therefore, it is necessary to gradually increase the share of renewable biomass into food, materials, energy and fuel to enable the business case for sustainable agriculture biomass.

The Corbey Commission spent the last years regularly advises on biomass sustainability. In the spring of 2015, the Commission will offer a more comprehensive vision document Sustainable Bioeconomy 2030 to the Cabinet.

Read the publication: Vision for sustainable biomass (Commission Corbey)

Biomass is the coming decades as indispensable raw materials, energy and fuels.
