Hemp can be used as material for building materials and textiles, as well as animal feed. Yet the market for this commodity is still very small. The Green Deal Natural Fibres is to change this by developing business cases to increase the market and the use of natural fibers.

On February 4, the Green Deal Natural Fibres was signed. “This is a Green Deal with those who did not know each other beforehand, but together they seek an optimum valuation of natural fibers,” says Dirk de Jong, coordinator Green Deal from the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Broad scope

Hemp grows well on Dutch soil and can serve as raw material in various industries. Anno 2015, this old crop cultivation for many sectors suddenly interesting. “Therefore, this Green Deal wide and pilots are four sectors simultaneously started,” explains De Jong increasing. Except that hemp as a raw material for the industry can serve, the plant also provides for the agricultural sector a grateful and ecological cultivation. “Hemp needs no pesticides and little fertilization. Because the plant deep roots, they enrich the soil with organic matter and oxygen. The quality and biodiversity of the crop field increases as a result.”

Hemp as a building block

In the textile industry hemp only sparsely used compared to other natural fibers like flax and cotton. Abroad, on a limited scale hemp stone available for construction. “And while hemp bricks compared to concrete or brick better insulation, more environmentally friendly and much lighter than traditional bricks. Therefore we develop new profitable business cases based on hemp and facilitate this process through the Green Deal approach.”

Hemp feed

Also, for farmers and for the production of composites business cases developed. “Farmers put hemp in the structure source in the diet of dairy cows. The protein portion of the plant can even serve as a replacement for soy in animal feed. It also looks at the pilot feed the effects of hemp for example, milk production and use of antibiotics. The pilot composites develops new business models for composite materials with natural fibers. “

For arable also

New bio-based business cases for natural fibers should except for the processing industry also profitable for the farmer, “he emphasizes.” At present, the market price of hemp still low. By first generating sales and vote the production here on out, the market price per hectare of hemp or flax will go up, “he expected.

Hemp is a crop that thrives in the Dutch climate and biomass is suitable for many industrial applications.
