Therefore Solynta occurs, the developer of the culture method, increased to Biosolar Cells, a large research consortium funded by TKI BBE some time researching the conversion of solar energy into biofuels, chemicals and foods.

Plants convert on average only 0.5% of the received solar energy, while the theoretical maximum is around 5%. So there is great demand for crops that can convert sunlight more efficiently and produce more material for biomaterials, biofuels and food.

Efficiency Battle

Biosolar does Cells, with financial support from TKI BBE, research to make it more efficient. This is a difficult process because of thousands of genes are involved in the process of photosynthesis. René Klein Lankhorst is from Wageningen UR Director BioSolar Cells: ‘In order to figure out how photosynthesis works exactly, we need to use plants that are genetically very similar. We can then test out which genes cause the differences in performance. ”

Genetically identical

A few kilometers from the office of Klein Lankhorst Solynta developed a new method for growing potatoes. This method was Solynta by the Ministry of Economic Affairs declared National Icon 2014. Pim Lindhout, Director R & D: “We have discovered how you can grow potatoes from seed. We now breeds in which genetic variation is zero and where we are relatively simple properties of other potato varieties can crossbreeding. So we can provide wonderful research material to BioSolar Cells. We discover this research interesting genetic traits which we can use in the development of new varieties.

Effect of stress

BioSolar Cells and Solynta also look at the effect of stress on photosynthesis. Klein Lankhorst, “We see what lack of water, salty conditions and higher temperatures do with the efficiency of the plant. Because we can now work with the potatoes Solynta, I expect that we will find much quicker clues to develop plants that are good with these stressors.

Top Consortium Foundation for Knowledge and Innovation Biobased Economy (TKI BBE) carries the cross-sectoral program of Biobased Economy. This program is part of the Top Sectors Chemicals and Energy. In addition, we are working hard on the Biobased Economy in Topsector Agri & Food.

A new revolutionary method to cultivate new potato could give a boost to solar research.
