{"id":23646,"date":"2014-12-10T02:51:08","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T00:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/biomassmagazine.com\/articles\/11279\/australian-government-funds-biomass-harvester-development"},"modified":"2014-12-09T15:40:20","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T13:40:20","slug":"renewable-biomass-fast-growing-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/renewable-biomass-fast-growing-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewable biomass from fast growing trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said Biosystems Engineering would be further developing, building and testing an innovative woody biomass harvester.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFast growing trees have the potential to offer an attractive renewable feedstock if a cost effective harvesting method were developed,\u201d Mr Frischknecht said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiosystems Engineering plans to collect biomass from certain species of eucalyptus trees that can be harvested every three to five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese species are complementary to food production and are already being used on Australian farms as wind screens and to tackle salinity and boost biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing them as a renewable fuel may offer a win-win outcome for farmers and could potentially create a new model for community based biomass energy hubs in rural Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The $3.5 million project aims to collect 15,000 tonnes of chipped Mallee at a plantation near Casino in NSW during a 33 day harvester trial.
