Kassel\/Abu Dhabi. About 50 percent of the worldwide oil and gas reserves can be found in the Middle East, which as a region is also becoming increasingly important for Wintershall: since 2010, the company has been systematically expanding its presence in the Gulf region and is also appearing at this year’s ADIPEC, the \u201cAbu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n

From 10 to 13 November 2014, Germany\u2019s largest international oil and gas producer will be showcasing its activities and currently most important research project made in Germany, the Schizophyllan biopolymer, at its own stand (Hall 6, Stand 6236). Developed together with BASF, this biodegradable biopolymer is designed to increase the oil extraction rates from reservoirs. The demand for solutions which are utilising oil and gas reserves more efficiently is also increasing in the Middle East. Rainer Seele, Chairman of Wintershall, is convinced: \u201cWe have the know-how and the technology to present ourselves as an attractive partner in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wintershall expanding its activities in the United Arab Emirates<\/h3>\n

With its participation in the ADIPEC, Wintershall is underlining the special importance of the Middle East for the company\u2019s strategic orientation. Wintershall has been increasingly active in the region for several years now and is planning to expand its upstream activities there. For this purpose, in 2010 the company opened a regional representative office in Abu Dhabi. In June 2012, Wintershall signed an agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the Austrian OMV company regarding the technical appraisal of the Shuwaihat sour gas and condensate field. As the operator, Wintershall is relying on its extremely high HSE standards and more than 40 years of experience in the safe development and production of sour gas fields.<\/p>\n

Experts presenting important EOR research project<\/h3>\n

In particular, Wintershall is deploying sophisticated and new technologies to increase the yield from oil deposits. In this regard the company has a decisive advantage in the race for technological innovation: as a 100 percent subsidiary of BASF \u2013 the world’s leading chemical company \u2013 Wintershall is able to develop many innovations together with its parent company. The Schizophyllan biopolymer is currently the most important research project. The biopolymer, which is produced by a fungus, thickens water that is then injected into the reservoir to improve the oil production. This promises an effective and environmentally friendly use of more mature oil fields. It is currently being tested in an oil field in northern Germany. This research project will be graphically presented by the Wintershall experts directly at the trade fair stand with a remarkable walk-in display.<\/p>\n

The Wintershall technology has considerable potential: until now only one third of the available oil is ever extracted from the worldwide reservoirs. However, if enhanced oil recovery (EOR) were to be used to increase the global production rate by just 10 percent, this would create a potential corresponding to four times the reserves in Saudi Arabia. At the moment, though, EOR technologies only contribute to about 1.5 percent of the global oil production, whereby the world’s largest output is currently provided by steam flooding that heats oil using hot steam. Wintershall has also been successfully applying this process for more than 30 years in Germany.<\/p>\n
