This is the Biobased Economy Centre of Expertise (CoE BBE) in Breda a world first in range. No nuts and bolts is coming in handy.

This week was at Avans the official start of the project subsidized by SIA Touch. “It must be the first real biobased bridge in the Netherlands, even the world. A bridge made entirely of natural materials, “says project manager Douwe-Frits Broens of the CoE BBE. The expertise which Avans Hogeschool Zeeland and investigate the Terneuzen planned cyclist and pedestrian bridge.

Knowledge

The special thing about this project is that the entire bridge, with a span of 30 meters, consists of flax fiber, bio-foam and bioharsen. According Broens this is not unprecedented. “What matters is to develop knowledge that we can use in the future in all kinds of projects. That is the goal we want to achieve with the construction of the biobased bridge. ”

Co-project manager Alwin Hoogendoorn: “The construction of this bridge was not done twenty times before. It is a ‘first of a kind’. The CoE BBE plays a major role in the research process. It’s really a matter of doing. Sometimes it’s like Edison. Tampering and tinkering in a shed. We can not just pick some bricks and start building. There is a lot more to it. ”

Important partners

The idea around a biobased bridge does not stand alone. There is a cooperation between the regions of West-Brabant and Zeeland, the so-called Biobased Delta. Multinationals, SMEs, governments and research institutions from Southwest Netherlands focus namely along the biobased economy. “The biobased bridge hemp and flax is a great test case. Just to see how long-lasting the material. It is, after originally perishable material, “says Broens. “But above all, the learning effect first. That is essential. ”

The biobased bridge project is a partnership which includes the CoE BBE, Ro & Ad Architects, NPSP composites, Zeeland Province, CBK Zealand and the municipality of Terneuzen join forces.

With the award of the research grant of more than 3 tons of Foundation Innovation Alliance (SIA) is the arrival of a bridge that is completely composed of plant material a big step closer.
