Music festivals are known for creating a lot of garbage \u2013 with cheap tents that get trashed and left behind being a large part of the problem. But with his recent pilot project called \u2018One Nights Tent\u2019, Devin Malone presents an alternative: the biodegradable, one-time use tent.<\/p>\n
One Nights Tent is made with a waterproof and 100% biobased film. Composed of PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) and bioElastomers, the film is created through a process known as blown film extrusion. The resulting tents are entirely biodegradable, compostable and recyclable. They contain no zippers for example, but are rather closed with rubber bands.<\/p>\n
This invention could be a step in the right direction when it comes to cleaning up music festivals. Due to the nature of many festivals (i.e. bad weather, mud, drinking, smoking etc.), numerous popular retailers market cheap and poor-quality tents as \u2018festival\u2019 tents that can be used once and then thrown away. Organizers at Glastonbury estimate that last year alone, more than 20,000 tents were discarded during the five-day festival. This generates a waste problem not only in terms of clean up but also because the fabric used in many cheap tents contains harmful and toxic substances such as fluropolymer based waterproof coatings.<\/p>\n
The One Nights Tent concept was launched as a pilot project last month at the Lowlands festival near Amsterdam and all 50 of the tents for sale were sold. At the end of the festival, the tent owners had the option of taking their tent home as a souvenir, or returning it for a deposit. Approximately 60% of the tents were returned for a deposit and then recycled.<\/p>\n
One Nights Tent are seeking to professionalize the production and make some adjustments to the tent. They are currently seeking investors to take the project forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
