A Lafourche Parish mill will be the site of a $60 million biochemical facility that will turn the waste product of the sugar refining process into a useable product. Virdia Inc. announced today, with Gov. Bobby Jindal, that it will build the plant next to the Raceland Raw Sugar Corp. mill. It will turn bagasse into high-value industrial sugars and biofuels.<\/p>\n
According to Louisiana Economic Development, the project will create 81 new jobs with an average pay of $55,000. An estimated 120 construction jobs are anticipated.<\/p>\n
The company will begin hiring in 2015, with expected completion of the $60 million project in Raceland by the end of 2016.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe chose Louisiana due to the accessibility of \u2026 sugar cane bagasse, which will enable us to validate the technology and develop further the applications and possibilities offered by this technology,\u201d Virdia Managing Director Otavio Pontes said.<\/p>\n
According to an LED statement, state officials began discussing a project in Louisiana with Virdia in August 2012. To secure the facility, the state offered Virdia an incentive package that includes a performance-based, $1 million Economic Development Award program grant to offset infrastructure costs.<\/p>\n
Virdia will also receive the opportunity to use the LED\u2019s FastStart program for workforce development program and is expected to use the state\u2019s Industrial Tax Exemption Program.<\/p>\n
