The key to this performance lies in the diaper core. BASF offers optimized products for a wide range of diaper cores. Market demand for renewable-based products is a key driver why BASF Hygiene Business is exploring superabsorbent polymers (SAP) that are based on renewable resources. Market surveys show that end consumers are looking for products that contribute to climate protection, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save fossil resources. Using renewable raw materials can help meet these demands.

SAP based on renewables using the mass balance approach is one way that BASF contributes to meeting sustainability challenges and finding solutions for a growing market demand.

BASF uses only certified sustainable renewable raw materials as feedstock for mass-balanced products and thereby ensures a closed chain of custody. The mass balance approach creates outstanding opportunities: it is a readily available drop-in solution which leads to unchanged product performance. It saves fossil resources, reduces the product carbon footprint and is third party verified. In order to perfectly match market demand there is flexibility to choose the share of renewable feedstock used between 20% and 100% by allocation. Therefore it allows for tailored market approaches and optimized value added solutions, which can contribute to reach sustainability goals of the entire value chain.

The Mass Balance approach is a novel approach for the use of renewable feedstock in initial steps of chemical production even in complex interlinked sites and the allocation of the renewable share to selected products. It uses a standard, developed by the German accredited independent entity TÜV SÜD together with BASF and can be realized for a broad variety of BASF products.

Modern baby diapers have high absorbency combined with superior leakage protection and dryness.
