The adverse weather of the past few weeks has also prevented elderly cane from being re-planted during the ideal time of year. Therefore, the average age of the plants available for next year will be higher as well, and no real improvement can be expected for 2015/16.

This less calming news in conjunction with other factors such as rising sugar exports may result in a cane share used for fuel ethanol below the 2013/14 level of 54.4%. The attractiveness of sugar exports follows the weaker Real.

On the other side, 2-3 mln cars will join the Brazilian fleet again this year. This means that at least 5% more anhydrous ethanol will be needed in 2014. However, little, if any additional hydrous ethanol will be made in the coming campaign, the sugar sector expects. With the United States now closed to Brazilian ethanol, a mere 600 mln litres of ethanol will be exported in 2014/15, according to industry estimates. These figures must be seen in conjunction with a crisis which has lasted for six years and has weakened all but a very few players.

The extremely dry weather which began in December 2013 and continued throughout January and February this year, together with well above average temperatures, has diminished hopes that the Centre/South’s (CS) 2014/15 (Apr/Mar) cane crush would be at least 5% larger than the 596 mln tonnes in 2013/14.
