{"id":19644,"date":"2014-03-21T03:06:49","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T01:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biofuelsdigest.com\/biobased\/2014\/03\/18\/dyson-and-cpi-explore-use-of-bioplastics-in-consumer-products\/"},"modified":"2014-03-19T11:32:41","modified_gmt":"2014-03-19T09:32:41","slug":"dyson-cpi-explore-use-bioplastics-consumer-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/dyson-cpi-explore-use-bioplastics-consumer-products\/","title":{"rendered":"Dyson and CPI explore use of bioplastics in consumer products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19657 alignright\" alt=\"plastic-300x227\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/plastic-300x227.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/>In a project funded by the Technology Strategy Board, British manufacturer Dyson is working with the University of Cambridge\u2019s Institute for Manufacturing and the Centre for Process innovation on consumer products made using biopolymers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the building blocks of resins and bioplastics, biopolymers are typically made from plant-based starches and already have a wide range of applications such as food packaging, 3D printing and consumer electronics.<\/p>\n<p>The work carried out will assess the high level economic and technical feasibility of using biopolymers in a closed loop process, which may ultimately improve the ability to recycle consumer products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiopolymers are really exciting because they have the potential to be reused infinitely and that is the perfect material if you want to look at recycling, because you don\u2019t lose performance and you can essentially use less material,\u201d explained Owen Nicholson, Dyson\u2019s external research programme manager.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the end-of-life benefit of reclaiming and recycling materials, meaning there is a need to use fewer resources; biopolymers also have other appealing traits which make them useful in this application, such as transparency, surface gloss, high rigidity and flexibility of processing.<\/p>\n<p>However, the way forward remains challenging and will require a \u201cconcerted effort and could take a number of years\u201d according to Graham Hillier, Director of Strategy and Futures at CPI.
