Large investments from European utilities have activated a massive build-out of the sector, pushing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biomassmagazine.com\/articles\/8904\/german-pellets-plans-second-giant-wood-pellet-plant-in-u-s\">under construction plant capacities over the one million tons per year<\/a>\u00a0mark. The plant that have been completed and those that already had export capabilities are having an effect on the quantities crossing the pond. By the end of 2013, total annual pellet export grew\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/gats\/default.aspx\">by 42% to 2.7 million metric tons\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0from 2012. The exports, however, are not spread evenly across Europe. The graph below shows that total world export of pellets correlates strongly with shipmets to the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US Pellet Export WorldWide and UK\" src=\"http:\/\/images.bbibiofuels.com\/img\/1102014_12_33_46_PM.png\" width=\"560\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom is currently the largest importer of U.S. produced pellets, three fold. Below are the top nine importers of U.S. pellets for 2013 and their associated quantities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Top 9 Pellet Importers3\" src=\"http:\/\/images.bbibiofuels.com\/img\/1102014_12_54_51_PM.png\" width=\"500\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Belguim, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, and Germany will undoubtedly grow with multiple plants dedicated to demand in EU countries. It remains unlikely that the United Kingdom will be unthroned as the largest importer of U.S. pellets. United Kingdom utility, Drax, is building two plants with a combined capacity of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/draxbiomass.com\/news\/drax-biomass-announces-two-new-pellet-plant-projects-and-integrated-port-facility\/\">1 million metric tons of capacity to feed their Yorkshire power plant<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States pellet export market is rapidly growing to meet European demand for a less carbon intense substitute for coal.
