Latin America and the Caribbean host about 50% of the world’s biodiversity and 23% of the planet’s forests, underscoring the relevance of this area for the development of the bioeconomy. This biological wealth is not only vital from an ecological perspective but also offers unique opportunities for sustainable economic development.

The event will be organized by Panama’s National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) along with the Latin American Bioeconomy Network. The main challenge will be to turn international attention into concrete projects, alliances, and financing that drive the sustainable development of the region. This is crucial for countries to capitalize on their biodiversity sustainably, ensuring long-term benefits for both the environment and local economies.

Opportunities for Latin America

This summit aims to be a platform for the entire region, according to Eduardo Ortega-Barría of SENACYT, who emphasized the opportunity to showcase Latin America’s biological, scientific, and innovation wealth. The meeting will allow countries to share their experiences and learn from successful strategies implemented elsewhere. Additionally, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) supports this initiative as a space for international dialogue on the future of the bioeconomy.

Since the first edition in Berlin in 2015, the Global Bioeconomy Summit has brought together leaders in public policy, scientists, and private sectors interested in the bioeconomy. In the 2028 edition, governments, universities, and companies from the region are expected to present their progress and strategies in this emerging area. The participation of multiple sectors will be key to fostering innovation and the development of new technologies that can be applied in different contexts.

Regional leadership and its challenges

With growing scientific capacity and innovative companies, Latin America and the Caribbean are well-positioned to lead in bioeconomy. According to the IICA, the center of gravity of the bioeconomy in the Americas has shifted towards this region since 2024, reflecting a renewed focus on implementation and financing. This shift has been driven by the recognition of the region’s potential to develop sustainable solutions that could be replicated globally.

The Global Bioeconomy Policy Report 2026 also highlights the experiences of Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador, and other countries, showcasing their approaches and achievements in bioeconomy. These efforts are joined by the Amazon Bioeconomy Strategy, a shared initiative by the countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, which seeks to coordinate efforts for the sustainable use of the Amazon region. This collaborative approach is essential to address common challenges and maximize the potential of the bioeconomy in this critical area of the planet.

In 2028, Panama will host a groundbreaking event for the global bioeconomy by receiving the Global Bioeconomy Summit.
