This is the goal of the collaboration between Fulgar, a company specializing in the development and production of man-made fibers for the textile industry, Oroblù, a brand of CSP International Fashion Group, and The LYCRA Company, which have combined their expertise and technologies to create a new generation of bio-based hosiery.

The result is Oroblù’s Bio-Derived Sneakers Tights collection, a capsule collection of tights made entirely with bio-derived yarns, through the combination of Fulgar’s Q-GEO, a bio-based polyamide containing raw materials from renewable sources, and Renewable LYCRA EcoMade Fiber, The LYCRA Company’s bio-based elastane.

The project represents a significant step forward in applied research in hosiery: for the first time, an Oroblù tights style uses bio-derived yarns for both of the product’s main textile components – the polyamide and elastomeric components. This approach brings the research into renewable raw materials from the yarn stage through to the finished product, through collaboration between companies specialising in different stages of the supply chain.

At the heart of the project is Fulgar’s Q-GEO, a polyamide yarn in which almost half of the raw material is bio-based. The renewable component is derived from industrial corn grown on land not intended for the cultivation of rice, wheat or other traditional food crops. Forty per cent of the corn kernel is used to produce the bio-based component, while the remaining parts are allocated to other uses, including food and animal feed production.

The development of Q-GEO stems from Fulgar’s research into next-generation fibres and its commitment to providing the textile supply chain with bio-based solutions capable of maintaining the performance characteristics required by the industry. The yarn offers a balance of softness against the skin and moisture management, with 50 per cent higher moisture absorption than standard polyamide and enhanced breathability. These characteristics are combined with the strength and durability inherent to polyamide, as well as ultra-fast drying and flame-retardant properties, without the addition of additives.

Q-GEO is therefore part of Fulgar’s journey towards a new generation of yarns developed from renewable sources, complementing the company’s other sustainable solutions and confirming the role of material research as a key driver in supporting the evolution of the hosiery supply chain.

“Our collaboration with CSP and The LYCRA Company is a concrete example of how material innovation can translate into real-world, high-value applications. The use of Q-GEO in combination with LYCRA EcoMade Fiber has enabled us to contribute to the development of a product in which both of its main textile components are derived from renewable sources. This achievement confirms the role of research and the development of new solutions in supporting the transition towards a textile supply chain that is increasingly attentive to the raw materials it uses,” says Daniela Antunes, marketing manager, Fulgar.

The tights’ elastomeric component is instead made with Renewable LYCRA EcoMade Fiber, a bio-based elastane composed of approximately 70 per cent industrial corn not intended for direct use in the human food chain. It enables a reduction in carbon footprint of up to 45 per cent, based on a cradle-to-gate assessment, compared with conventional fossil-based LYCRA fibre.

The result is a new-generation, semi-opaque pair of tights with a bio-based core, developed to provide comfort and a comfortable fit. Designed to be worn with sneakers and booties, the style features a special reinforced sole, designed to provide greater durability and comfort during wear.

With this project, Fulgar, The LYCRA Company and CSP International Fashion Group demonstrate how innovation in lower-impact textile solutions can translate into a product designed to meet the needs of contemporary hosiery, combining comfort, fit and performance with a more considered choice of raw materials.

Bringing raw material innovation from renewable sources into the hosiery sector through a concrete solution that combines performance, comfort and material research.
