Bio-based materials \u2013 those from nature \u2013 have the potential to be more sustainable.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-the-jrc-is-doing\">What the JRC is doing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The JRC is developing novel methods to apply bio-based materials and engineered timber in construction and renovation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its&nbsp;NOTICE-EUB project&nbsp;(NOvel TImber Composites for Energy and Seismic Upgrading of Buildings) has evaluated the use of prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels in building renovation, demonstrating seismic safety through full-scale experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The JRC\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/scientific-activities\/innovative-safe-automated-and-decarbonised-built-environment-ibuilt\/circular-modular-and-site-construction-methods_en#novel-modular-and-reusable-panels-for-safe-and-carbon-free-buildings-reuse\">Novel Modular and Reusable Panels for Safe and Carbon-free Buildings (REUSE)<\/a>&nbsp;project explored the potential of CLT panels in modular construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prefabricated-timber-panels-for-building-renovation\">Prefabricated timber panels for building renovation&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;EU-funded NOTICE-EUB project provides a sustainable solution for&nbsp;<strong>reducing seismic risks and improving energy efficiency<\/strong>&nbsp;in European buildings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by the&nbsp;JRC Ispra<strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;the project introduces an&nbsp;innovative timber-based retrofit system&nbsp;designed to enhance&nbsp;seismic resilience&nbsp;and&nbsp;energy efficiency&nbsp;with minimal environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTICE-EUB is funded through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu\/about-msca\">Horizon 2020 &#8211; Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:14px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The CLT-based renovation system has\u00a0<strong>wide applicability<\/strong>\u00a0as it was designed for reinforced building types in Europe&#8217;s residential stock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reversibility,\u00a0low invasiveness\u00a0and\u00a0lightweight\u00a0nature of the method<\/strong>\u00a0allow it to be adapted for other, more sensitive structural systems, such as unreinforced masonry buildings.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speed\u00a0and\u00a0ease of assembly<\/strong>, minimising downtime and labour costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Innovative approach which prioritises\u00a0damage control<\/strong>, localising repairs to low-cost and easily replaceable metallic connectors, preventing dangerous collapse mechanisms often associated with traditional brick-masonry infill walls.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Significant improvements in\u00a0structural safety<\/strong>\u00a0against earthquakes, meeting modern performance-based seismic design standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experimental testing<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/embed_medium\/public\/2024-10\/Notice-eub%203.jpg?itok=iLA88Gv9\" alt=\"Proposed timber-based seismic retrofit system\" style=\"width:288px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Proposed timber-based seismic retrofit system.\u00a9 European Commission<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Full-scale testing&nbsp;has been carried out at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/tools-and-laboratories\/open-access-jrc-research-infrastructures\/european-laboratory-structural-assessment_en\">JRC European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA)&nbsp;<\/a>and the&nbsp;University of Trento, demonstrating promising seismic and thermal performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advanced hybrid earthquake tests have been coupled with blower door tests, assessing how the CLT-based retrofit system moderates air infiltration, ensuring the functionality and effectiveness of the integrated thermal insulation system across a sequence of simulated seismic events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Detailed&nbsp;retrofit design guidelines, derived from experimental and numerical research, will soon be available, offering valuable insights for&nbsp;engineers, policymakers and stakeholders. This transformative project is poised to influence the future of building retrofits across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experimental evidence generated by these projects also supports the JRC\u2019s role in developing the structural Eurocodes, whose second generation expands the design provisions for timber structures, including CLT and the seismic design of timber buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting EU policy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By&nbsp;<strong>integrating thermal insulation materials<\/strong>&nbsp;into the design, the proposed retrofit system not only strengthens buildings but also delivers significant&nbsp;<strong>energy savings<\/strong>, aligning with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32024L1275&amp;qid=1727732888917\">revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)<\/a>, which emphasises energy-efficient renovations alongside structural improvements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dual-purpose approach supports the goals of the\u00a0<strong>European Green Deal<\/strong>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?qid=1603122220757&amp;uri=CELEX:52020DC0662\">Renovation Wave<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A52021DC0573&amp;qid=1727732965833\">New European Bauhaus<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>initiatives, promoting safer and more sustainable building stocks across the EU.
