The effort sits inside a broader net-zero agriculture strategy launched in 2022, which targets zero emissions by 2040.

Nineteen companies specializing in biomass conversion have joined the programme. Combined, they have poured US$10.15 million into turning farm leftovers into new materials. So far, the work has produced 49 different bio-based products, Agriculture Minister Chen Junne-jih said.

Tainan offers one striking example. A local textile company grinds up discarded oyster shells to spin bio-based yarn. It also mixes oyster shell powder with recycled plastic bottles, creating functional biofibres out of what would otherwise be trash.

Energy is part of the equation too. At a longan farm in Tainan, pruned branches and scrap wood get pressed into biomass pellets. Burning those pellets then supplies the heat used to dry the fruit, turning farm waste into farm fuel.

Cutting emissions from agriculture takes more than swapping energy sources, Chen said. Rice paddies and livestock still release methane, and fertiliser use still drives nitrous oxide emissions. Both need attention going forward.

That last gas is worth watching closely. Nitrogen fertiliser helps crops grow, but it also releases nitrous oxide, a gas nearly 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide, according to the Agricultural Technology Research Institute.

Taken together, Taiwan’s farms, ranches, forests, and fisheries released about 6.5 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2024. The Climate Change Administration puts that at roughly 2.38% of the country’s total emissions.

Farmers in Taiwan produce mountains of waste every year.
