Monta\u00f1o said increased investments in fundamental research are needed to identify niche opportunities that will support inclusive and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere should be more investments in the fundamental research to identify niche areas [of the Philippines bioplastic industry] as an opportunity for inclusive growth and sustainable development,\u201d <strong>Monta\u00f1o<\/strong> said during his plenary presentation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts described bioplastics as plastics derived from biological sources, including seaweeds, that can be broken down into harmless materials through natural processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Academician Ernesto J. del Rosario said the Philippines should maximize its vast marine resources by expanding seaweed farming to ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials for bioplastics and other seaweed-based products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe are only utilizing a very small fraction of our available ocean and sea resources for growing seaweeds,\u201d <strong>del Rosario <\/strong>said. \u201cWe have a large economic zone where we can grow seaweed as a source of biopolymers. So, that makes us a very potential producer of bioplastics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philippines is currently the world\u2019s fourth-largest producer of seaweeds, accounting for 4.2 percent of global production, with <em>Kappaphycus alvarezii <\/em>contributing the largest share of the country\u2019s output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the experts, seaweeds contain valuable biopolymers that can be converted into biodegradable plastics, including carrageenan from <em>Kappaphycus<\/em> and <em>Eucheuma<\/em>, alginates from <em>Sargassum<\/em>, agar and fucoidan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monta\u00f1o said researchers should further study the chemistry of these biopolymers and combine them with bioadditives such as glycerol or sorbitol to improve the strength and flexibility of bioplastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe have the biopolymer plus additives that would result in bioplastics,\u201d <strong>he<\/strong> said. \u201cThis is important to develop a strong bioplastics industry; we must study the chemistry of biopolymers and additives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Del Rosario also encouraged universities and research institutions to focus on isolating long-chain biopolymers, evaluating their properties and improving production processes for bioplastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that continued R&amp;D is needed to identify and cultivate climate-resilient seaweed varieties that can help lower production costs while protecting the industry\u2019s long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve probably heard of the effect of global warming on the corals,\u201d <strong>del Rosario<\/strong> said. \u201cWe do not want that to happen to the seaweeds here in the Philippines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The academicians said developing a domestic seaweed bioplastics industry could create sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal communities, particularly in Sulu, Southern Mindanao and other seaweed-producing provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked where seaweed-derived bioplastics should rank among the country\u2019s long-term research priorities, both academicians said it should be included in the Philippines\u2019 top five priority technologies through 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual scientific meeting is among DOST\u2019s initiatives to promote science-based, innovative and inclusive solutions under its four strategic pillars: human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection and sustainability, in line with the OneDOST4U: Solutions and Opportunities for All program.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"860\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/09\/Researchers-push-seaweed-bioplastics-860x484-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-181160\" style=\"width:646px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/09\/Researchers-push-seaweed-bioplastics-860x484-1.webp 860w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/09\/Researchers-push-seaweed-bioplastics-860x484-1-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/09\/Researchers-push-seaweed-bioplastics-860x484-1-150x84.webp 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/09\/Researchers-push-seaweed-bioplastics-860x484-1-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/09\/Researchers-push-seaweed-bioplastics-860x484-1-400x225.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Marcos Jr. administration is strengthening support for science-driven and sustainable technologies as experts from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) called for seaweed-derived bioplastics to become one of the Philippines\u2019 top technology priorities through 2050.
