This advance would allow bio-based chemicals and biofuels to be made from more plentiful non-food sources, helping them better compete with petroleum-based chemicals and fuels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeedstock is the single largest driver of overall fuel production economics. While agricultural waste is a common target feedstock, municipal and industrial waste can be near zero cost, or even negative cost,\u201d said Andrew Soare, Lux Research Senior Analyst and the lead author of the report titled, \u201cCellulosic Chemicals and Fuels Race to Compete with First-Gen Sugar Economics.\u201d \u201cWhile enzymes are a big cost driver for cellulosic sugar, methods such as supercritical fluid processes that don\u2019t use enzymes at all can offer cheaper options,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thermochemical pretreatment options offer cellulosic sugars for $0.25 per kg operating cost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-17982\" alt=\"PR_Graphic_11_11_13\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PR_Graphic_11_11_13-300x272.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2013\/11\/PR_Graphic_11_11_13-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2013\/11\/PR_Graphic_11_11_13-1024x931.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2013\/11\/PR_Graphic_11_11_13.jpg 1534w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lux Research analysts built a cost model for a 700,000-ton-per-year plant to study the five main routes from lignocellulosic biomass to sugars. Among their findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cellulosic sugar costs vary.<\/strong> The minimum selling price for cellulosic sugars depends on the processes used.
