{"id":17910,"date":"2013-11-12T02:10:11","date_gmt":"2013-11-12T00:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biofuelsdigest.com\/bdigest\/2013\/11\/11\/the-blame-game-renewables-experts-oil-refiners-trade-barbs-on-impact-of-rising-renewable-fuel-mandates\/"},"modified":"2013-11-11T16:16:17","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T14:16:17","slug":"blame-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/blame-game\/","title":{"rendered":"The blame game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Washington, the American Fuel &amp; Petrochemical Manufacturers is disputing the numbers from RFA\u2019s recently released analysis, which shows how Big Oil stands to gain a $9.2-15.2 billion windfall from a possible reduction to EPA\u2019s 2014 RVOs.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bob Dinneen, RFA President and CEO, commented:<br \/>\n\u201cAFPM are <a href=\"http:\/\/renewablefuelsassociation.createsend1.com\/t\/y-l-tdiltdl-hyujjjurh-u\/\">misunderstanding the very basic principles of supply and demand<\/a>. If you reduce the gasoline supply by taking ethanol volume away, prices for gasoline will rise across the board. It\u2019s that simple. And eventually, the lost ethanol volume would be replaced by gasoline refined from tar sands, tight oil from fracking, or Venezuelan heavy crude, all of which are far more costly to the wallet and the environment than ethanol. Who stands to gain from higher gasoline prices and more gasoline volume? Oil refiners, of course. That\u2019s what this is really all about\u2014Big Oil wants to shut out competition and put more money in its already-stuffed pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As AFPM and RFA traded shots over the impact of changing next year\u2019s Renewable Fuel Standard blender obligations, Iowa State University economists Bruce Babcock and Sebastien Pouliot are pointing out that oil refining industries doomsday scenarios are flawed. \u201cThere are viable options versus restricting supply and driving up prices,\u201d CARD economists Babcock and Pouliot write. \u201cA more likely scenario is for companies affected by the RFS to evaluate available options and pursue an option that offers the greatest financial return over the longest term, even when an upfront investment is required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, new data emerged on exactly who is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/11\/07\/us-ethanol-credits-vitol-insight-idUSBRE9A606R20131107\">big winner in this year\u2019s soaring ethanol RIN marke<\/a>t. Traders say that the world\u2019s largest oil-trading firm, Vitol \u201cwas a big buyer of RINs early in the year before prices spiked.
