{"id":177075,"date":"2026-05-26T07:20:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T05:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=177075"},"modified":"2026-05-22T10:39:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T08:39:25","slug":"plastics-recycler-seeks-buyer-after-administrators-appointed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/plastics-recycler-seeks-buyer-after-administrators-appointed\/","title":{"rendered":"Plastics recycler seeks buyer after administrators appointed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Plastic Energy Finco Limited and Plastic Energy Limited&nbsp;will be represented by Geoffrey Rowley and Patrick Donnan of FRP Advisory Trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the administrators, the companies faced insufficient liquidity available within the group to affect a turnaround plan.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/05\/Handshake-Business-Deal-Merger-Acquisition-1024x632-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-177091\" style=\"width:614px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/05\/Handshake-Business-Deal-Merger-Acquisition-1024x632-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/05\/Handshake-Business-Deal-Merger-Acquisition-1024x632-1-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/05\/Handshake-Business-Deal-Merger-Acquisition-1024x632-1-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/05\/Handshake-Business-Deal-Merger-Acquisition-1024x632-1-768x474.jpg 768w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2026\/05\/Handshake-Business-Deal-Merger-Acquisition-1024x632-1-400x247.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Plastic Energy S.L.U., the entity which owns and operates the two plastic recycling plants in Seville and Almeria, Spain, has not entered into any insolvency process and those plants continue to operate as normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The administrators will continue to trade the group\u2019s business whilst they seek to find a buyer and employees are being retained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geoff Rowley, joint administrator and partner at FRP, said: \u201cPlastic Energy has developed market leading recycling processes since inception, but has suffered from a European market downturn and accordingly has been unable to evidence sustainable operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to sell the group\u2019s primary assets, including the IP and patents held, the shares in group entities (including Plastic Energy S.L.U. holding the recycling plants) and the joint venture interests, to maximise returns for creditors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plastic Energy\u2019s plastic-to-oil process<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 2011, Plastic Energy recycles end-of-life plastics into oil, intended to replace fossil oils in the production of new plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headquartered at Carter Lane, London, the company employs 200 people across the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Spain, France and remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its process heats plastics in the absence of oxygen to form hydrocarbon vapours, which are then condensed into a recycled oil, called TACOIL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company opened a research and development lab in Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park in November 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plastics recycling sector faces continued struggles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The liquidation comes during a difficult period for Europe\u2019s plastics recycling industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry body Plastics Recyclers Europe reported that the sector experienced its \u201csharpest decline\u201d in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsrecycle.com\/news\/european-plastics-recycling-sector-saw-sharpest-decline-in-2024\/\">its Plastics Recycling Industry Figures 2024<\/a>&nbsp;report, the organisation said recycling facilities representing roughly 300 kilotonnes of annual capacity were forced to close during the year \u2013 the largest contraction ever recorded by the association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary figures for 2025 suggest conditions have deteriorated further.
