Olaf Porc
© nova-Institute

Olaf Porc is a Research Associate at nova-Institute, where he has been working since early 2020. Since the beginning of 2026, he is part of the Renewable Feedstocks Department. His work focuses on the analysis of renewable feedstocks, biomass potentials and material and carbon flows, with a strong emphasis on data-driven insights for the European and global bioeconomy.

He is primarily involved in projects addressing feedstock availability, biomass potential analyses, and material, carbon and trade flows, including the movement of biogenic raw materials and bio-based products. His work combines extensive data collection and processing (e.g. Eurostat, FAOSTAT) with techno-economic evaluation (TEE) of processes and value chains. In addition, he works on the modelling of future scenarios to assess the long-term availability of renewable feedstocks under different development pathways.

Olaf is currently contributing to the update of the Carbon Flows Report of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI), a key reference for policy and industry. Having already worked on the first edition, he now supports the update of the report, which compiles and analyses the global and European supply and demand of fossil and renewable carbon and informs strategic decision-making on defossilisation pathways.

In previous projects, Olaf has worked on a wide range of studies addressing biomass availability, carbon flows and bioeconomy data analysis. He contributed to the joint Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) and Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) report “Is there Enough Biomass to Defossilise the Chemicals and Derived Materials Sector by 2050?”, where he supported the modelling and assessment of global agricultural and forestry biomass supply under different future scenarios.

He was also involved in the project “Biomassepotenziale Rheinisches Revier”, analysing regional biomass availability in the context of structural change and the transition towards a bioeconomy. Within the EU project STAR4BBS, Olaf conducted trade flow analyses of bio-based materials and contributed to the evaluation of sustainability certification schemes, gaining insight into certification systems, traceability and their role in global and EU markets.

In addition, he contributed to the report series “European Bioeconomy in Figures”, commissioned by the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), which provides data-driven insights into the macroeconomic structure of the EU bioeconomy, including turnover, employment and sectoral contributions.

Expertise

Olaf specialises in renewable feedstocks, data analysis, scenario modelling and carbon flow modelling within the bioeconomy. He also has experience in the assessment of sustainability certification schemes and traceability systems. His work connects global datasets with applied analysis to support industry and policy decisions.

Services

Analysis of renewable feedstocks and biomass potentials (global & regional)

Scenario modelling of future feedstock availability

Material, carbon and trade flow analysis (biogenic raw materials & bio-based products)

Data collection, processing and analysis (e.g. Eurostat, FAOSTAT)

Techno-economic evaluation (TEE) of processes and value chains

Assessment of sustainability certification schemes and traceability aspects

Development of data-driven insights for bioeconomy and defossilisation strategies

Support for studies, reports and strategic projects (EU, national, regional)

Background

Olaf holds a B.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Bonn and an M.Sc. in Crop Science, with a focus on plant health and phytomedicine.
