A new Horizon Europe project,\u00a0SUSBOARD<\/a>, has launched to transform the wood panel and furniture industries. It will develop 100% bio-based, formaldehyde-free and cost-competitive adhesive for particleboard (PB) and medium-density fibreboard (MDF).\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, Europe produces around 60 million m\u00b3 of PB and MDF<\/strong>, both of which are essential materials for construction and furniture manufacturing. Today, these boards still rely on fossil-based adhesives that emit formaldehyde and contribute significantly to carbon emissions. With a budget of \u20ac9,1 million, SUSBOARD will deliver an innovative alternative that not only meets industry performance standards but also supports Europe\u2019s path to climate neutrality<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSUSBOARD is a strong example of how science and industry can work hand in hand to deliver tangible solutions for Europe\u2019s Green Deal Industrial Plan,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0RTDS Association, project coordinator<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Building on the success of the SUSBIND<\/a><\/strong> project, which achieved more than 80% renewable raw materials in adhesives, SUSBOARD will complete the transition<\/strong> by introducing a fully bio-based amine component. This breakthrough is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of wood boards by up to 30%<\/strong> while eliminating formaldehyde-related health risks for consumers and workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSUSBOARD is bringing new possibilities to the wood panel and furniture industries. Our project will demonstrate that 100% bio-based adhesives can deliver competitive performance and cost efficiency while supporting Europe\u2019s climate objectives,\u201d\u00a0added\u00a0Wood K plus, the project\u2019s scientific coordinator.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The project aligns closely with the European Green Deal<\/strong>, Circular Economy Action Plan<\/strong>, and Zero Pollution Action Plan<\/strong>, supporting Europe\u2019s shift towards a fossil-free and greener future. By cutting industrial carbon emissions, reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, and fully eliminating formaldehyde-related health risks, SUSBOARD will contribute to healthier indoor environments and safer working conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next four years, the project will: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Scale production of the new adhesive to\u00a0multi-ton levels<\/strong>;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Demonstrate performance on\u00a0industrial production lines<\/strong>;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Test applications in\u00a0furniture manufacturing<\/strong>;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Develop a\u00a0prototype modular furniture product<\/strong>;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Ensure sustainability through a full\u00a0Safe and Sustainable by Design<\/strong>\u00a0assessment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The project unites leading research institutes, global chemical companies, and major wood panel producers from Austria, Germany, Portugal, and Turkey, including: RTDS Association, Wood K plus, IHD Dresden, Cargill, BASF SE, Sonae Arauco, Kastamonu Entegre, Balorman, and <\/strong>Sar\u00e9co<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
