The programme aligns with the CBE JU\u2019s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, as well as with the European Commission\u2019s recently presented Strategic Framework for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy, which reinforces the importance of biotechnology, biomanufacturing and circular value chains for Europe\u2019s industrial resilience and competitiveness. The 2026 call topics reflect these priorities while building directly on the achievements from CBE JU\u2019s expanding project portfolio.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026 work programme introduces 13 topics ranging from industrial flagship biorefineries to research actions that strengthen feedstock diversification, circular design, biotech scale-up and market uptake. The 2026 call for proposals will open on 23 April and close on 22 September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flagship Innovation Actions (TRL 8)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Boosting biorefinery competitiveness through biotech \u2013 \u20ac20M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) bio-based alternatives for fertilising and\/or crop protection products \u2013 \u20ac20M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSbD bio-based solutions for home and\/or personal care \u2013 \u20ac20M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diversification of nutritional food ingredient sources for increased EU resilience and strategic autonomy \u2013 \u20ac20M<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovation Actions (TRL 6-7)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biotech routes for valorisation of residual biomass \u2013 \u20ac14M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bio-based additives as alternatives to unlock and increase recyclability and\/or biodegradability \u2013 \u20ac14M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bio-based chemicals and\/or materials from woody residues \u2013 \u20ac14M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-performance, circular-by-design, bio-based thermosets \u2013 \u20ac14M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Films and coatings for circular packaging \u2013 \u20ac14M<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research and Innovation Actions (TRL 5)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Addressing separation and purification challenges in biorefineries \u2013 \u20ac6.5M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSbD bio-based polymers from alternative sources \u2013 \u20ac6.5M<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breakthrough and sustainable bio-based textile fibres \u2013 \u20ac6.5M<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coordination and Support Actions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supporting industry in the switch to sustainable and circular bio-based products and processes \u2013 \u20ac1.2M<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these investments will accelerate safe and sustainable biomanufacturing routes, bring bio-based ingredients and materials to market, reinforce value chain cooperation with primary producers and support regional economic development. The topics also contribute to the implementation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/competitiveness\/clean-industrial-deal_en\">Clean Industrial Deal<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/competitiveness\/competitiveness-compass_en\">Competitiveness Compass<\/a>\u00a0objectives to reduce fossil dependency, improve resource efficiency and strengthen industrial competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;With \u20ac170.7 million available across 13 targeted topics, the 2026 work programme is set to accelerate Europe\u2019s bio-based transition at a critical moment. It fits perfectly in the new Bioeconomy Strategy and supports the deployment of biotechnology, new value chains and sustainable industrial production across Europe, helping bring bio-based innovation from lab to fab. &#8220;<strong>CBE JU Executive Director Nicol\u00f3 Giacomuzzi-Moore <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.europa.eu\/events\/cbe-ju-info-day-2026\">CBE JU Info Day 2026<\/a>&nbsp;will take place on 12 March online, while a dedicated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.europa.eu\/events\/cbe-ju-networking-event\">networking event<\/a>&nbsp;will happen on 21 April in Brussels, Belgium. Registration for in-person attendance will open in January 2026.
