Since conventional recycling degrades material quality and prevents a true closed-loop economy, SAXY PLASTICS aims to develop innovative plastics from regional waste streams that are enzymatically biodegradable, robust, and versatile.

The project is coordinated by Aevoloop GmbH in Leipzig, which is developing long-chain building block plastics that are fully recyclable, bio-based, and biodegradable. The IPF is contributing by developing application-specific compounds from these polymers, tailored for packaging, technical components, and other uses. Key processing technologies such as compounding, injection molding, fiber spinning, 3D printing, and film extrusion are being investigated, positioning IPF as a crucial link between fundamental polymer synthesis and practical material development. Nearly €1 million has been allocated to IPF’s work within the project.

Other partners include the University of Leipzig, which contributes its expertise in enzymatic plastic recycling and the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC), which supports the project with upscaling know-how. Through collaboration with additional associated partners, the consortium covers the entire value chain – from raw material production and product design to recycling processes – thereby advancing a future-oriented green chemical industry in Saxony. By linking research and application, the project strengthens the innovation ecosystem, secures skilled workers, creates jobs, and attracts sustainable investment.

Contact

Dr. rer. nat.
