German retailer dm-drogerie markt<\/a> will launch new sustainable laundry detergents under its own-brand, Denkmit, this November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first two Denkmit<\/a> detergents, colour and all-purpose laundry detergent, will be available<\/a> in dm\u2019s more than 2.150 German stores.<\/p>\n\n\n

The German drugstore chain collaborated with its production partners LanzaTech and the Mibelle Group to create a new environmentally friendly manufacturing process for detergents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainable Surfactants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Almost all laundry detergents contain surfactants, which are chemical compounds that aid the removal of dirt when cleaning textiles or surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surfactants<\/a> are generally based on petroleum ingredients. The new detergents instead contain non-ionic surfactants made from CO2 recycled ethanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kerstin Erbe, managing director of dm-drogerie markt, stated, \u201cObtaining [surfactants] from recycled CO2<\/a> helps us to save resources. The process is a milestone in the ecological transformation of such consumer goods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replacing Fossil-Based Ingredients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

dm-drogerie markt, LanzaTech and the Mibelle Group have been collaborating on sustainable manufacturing since 2018. One of their first joint projects involved replacing fossil components with recycled CO2 in plastic production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dagmar Glatz, dm\u2019s expert for resource conservation and circular economy, said, \u201cReplacing fossil-based ingredients is one of the greatest technical challenges of the ecological transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is especially true for laundry detergents, cleaning products, and household cleaners, which must meet a wide range of requirements, such as effectiveness, skin compatibility, consistency, and, according to our standards, also environmental compatibility, in the best possible way. This can only be achieved through systemic innovations. This requires collaboration between companies and experts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Plans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

LanzaTech has patented this new fermentation-based CO2 recycling<\/a> process, which can also be applied to the manufacturing of other products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

dm-drogerie markt plans to develop cosmetic products that replace the typical vegetable oils with CO2 recycling as the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German retailer aims to continue its focus on sustainability<\/a> without increasing prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
