It captures CO₂ from a waste-to-energy incineration plant and makes the gas available as a recycled, food-grade raw material for a range of industries. The plant is currently being certified by DNV to comply with FSSC 22 000. With a capture capacity of around 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, the plant is designed to handle the flue gas from the incinerator at full scale.

Next steps

Rakkestad is the first in a growing portfolio of projects that Carbon Centric is developing in Norway and across the Nordics. Next in line is a carbon capture project from a bio-energy plant (BECCS project) at Kirkenær together with Solør Bioenergi, aiming to capture around 32,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually. These kinds of projects can generate carbon removals if the captured gas is sent to permanent storage, and the Kirkenær project is expected to start producing carbon dioxide removal certificates (CDRs) from 2028.

With this, Carbon Centric is taking the next step: from supplying CO₂ to industry, to also becoming a provider of high-quality carbon removals. Our goal is clear: capture as much CO₂ as possible, as quickly as possible, and help establish carbon capture and removal as a new green industry in the Nordics.

About Carbon Centric

Founded in 2021 by Fredrik Häger, Kenneth Juul and Østfold Energi, with Vardar and Obligo later joining as shareholders. Carbon Centric operates on a unique build-own-operate model: we develop, finance, build and operate carbon capture plants, allowing emitters to stay focused on their core business. The company’s goal is to reach final investment decisions by 2030 on projects with a combined annual CO₂ capture capacity of 1 million tonnes, and to establish itself as a leading European player in CCUS – driven by the vision of helping to bring atmospheric CO₂ levels back to 350 ppm.

Contact

Kenneth Juul, Chief Commercial Officer, Carbon Centric AS
Phone: +47 99 00 82 69
E-Mail: kj@carboncentric.no

Key facts – Rakkestad project

First full-scale carbon capture plant developed by Carbon Centric in Norway

Capacity: approx. 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year

Product: Liquid CO₂

Certification: FSSC 22 000 | food grade

End use: food & beverage industry, and other industrial applicationsFinal Investment Decision: December 2024

First delivery: 29 September 2025

Official inauguration: 16 October 2025, with invited guests and media

Today marks the official start of operations at Carbon Centric’s facility in Rakkestad, as the first batch of food-grade liquid CO₂ has been approved and delivered to the customer.
