You can extract fiber and still leave a residue with a good supply of organic matter, protecting the soil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Gandra, the benefits include straw formation for no-till planting, improved water infiltration and retention, breaking pest and disease cycles, and reducing soil temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRapid growth and dense planting quickly cover the canopy, making it difficult for light to reach weed plants and reducing the need for herbicides,\u201d <strong>he<\/strong> adds.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sechat-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/Robert_Gandra_pesquisador_e_doutorando_f18eb96362.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Gandra, researcher and PhD student.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6733576642335767;width:334px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Robert Gandra, agronomist. Image: Personal archive<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More fertile soil and natural biological control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other cover crops, hemp protects the soil against heavy rains and winds, preventing erosion and nutrient loss. Its residues offer organic matter that improves fertility and water retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultivation also helps control pests naturally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn example is the stink bug. Since it does not find hemp as a host, its population decreases, reducing the risk for the next crop,\u201d says Gandra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.\/2073-4395\/15\/5\/1121\">European study<\/a>, conducted over three years, showed that hemp residues increase soil carbon when incorporated in early spring. Slower decomposition protects the soil for a longer time and favors carbon sequestration, although nitrogen release is more gradual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agronomic advantages of hemp<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the plant&#8217;s attributes are high seed production, allowing for coverage of large areas, and resilience in moderate water stress conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stem, rich in lignin and hemicellulose, decomposes slowly, keeping the straw on the soil for a longer time \u2014 a similar effect to corn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHemp quickly closes the area, restricting the entry of light for competing plants and reducing the need for herbicides,\u201d explains <strong>Gandra.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability and carbon sequestration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental benefits are also significant. In terms of biomass, hemp can surpass traditional crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile corn produces 10 to 12 tons of dry matter per hectare, hemp can reach 25. About 40% of this volume remains in the field as residue, representing a relevant carbon supply,\u201d compares <strong>Gandra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, part of the carbon remains sequestered in products derived from the plant, such as paper, fabrics, ropes, and even concrete, delaying its return to the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International experiences and future potential<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hemp has already been tested as a cover crop in countries like the United States and New Zealand. In Pennsylvania, it showed potential to improve soil and generate extra income from fibers. In New Zealand, research evaluates cultivation between orchards, occupying the rows without competing with the main crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>Gandra<\/strong>, these experiences reinforce the promising future of hemp: \u201cIt can be used both in the off-season and in crop rotations or intercropping. It combines productive, environmental, and economic benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.covercropstrategies.com\/articles\/1059-hemp-as-a-cover-crop\">Experiments<\/a>&nbsp;by the Rodale Institute in the US highlight the plant&#8217;s rapid growth, reaching up to 3.6 meters in 85 days, covering the soil and reducing weed plants.
