Image: Megan Pope&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHistorically the international pellet market has focused on forest biomass,\u2019 <strong>Dr Moreira<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut with regulations in Australia ruling wood pellets not classified as renewable, we are trying to find alternative sources of biomass to produce pellets of the same quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWood has a lot of lignan, one of the most important components, and these weeds have a lignan content of about 25 per cent, which is competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other key finding is we can make market grade pellets, which means there are some weed to pellet conversion pathways that can provide market grade biofuels we could sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The pellets were produced by Ipswich startup, WorkEco, thanks to a seed grant from the Australian Government\u2019s Strategic University Reform Fund (SURF).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Study co-author and AgriSustain lab leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.uq.edu.au\/experts\/37988\">Associate Professor Sudhir Yadav<\/a>&nbsp;said the work aimed to reduce the environmental footprint and improve the sustainability of the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qaafi.uq.edu.au\/files\/102474\/Associate-Professor-Sudhir-Yadav-%28c%29-Megan-Pope-SQUARE.jpg\" alt=\"Associate Professor Sudhir Yadav.
